Professor Linda Garrelts MacLean received her BPharm from Washington State University in 1978. Her research has focused on outcomes associated with pharmacists performing at the top of their license. She is presently Associate Dean and Clinical Professor at Washington State University College of Pharmacy. Since 2005, she has served as the Project Coordinator for the Washington State University Diabetes Initiative. From 2007-2011, she served as Chair of the Department of Pharmacotherapy at Washington State University College of Pharmacy. From 2007-2012 she served as Clinical Associate Professor at Washington State University. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards and has an extensive body of published works.

Co-Principal Investigator Julie Akers, PharmD

Julie Akers received her PharmD from Washington State University in 2000. She is presently Clinical Assistant Professor at Washington State University College of Pharmacy. From 2011-2013, Dr. Akers served as Manager for Retail Pharmacies at the Everett Clinic. In 2012, Dr. Akers received the Pharmacy Leadership Award from the National Community Pharmacists Association.

Dr. Klepser earned his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Socioeconomics from the University of Iowa in 2005, his M.B.A from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management in 1997, and his B.A. in Communications from the University of Michigan in 1993. Dr. Klepser’s primary research interest is in improving medication use at the community pharmacy level. He has presented and published numerous scholarly articles related to patient adherence and community pharmacy-based interventions and has extensive experience using large administrative datasets. He has current and recent funding related to the development, implementation, and scalability of community pharmacy based services.

Principal Investigator Michael E. Klepser, PharmD, FCCP

Professor of Pharmacy Practice

Dr. Klepser received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan College Of Pharmacy in 1992. He has also completed a pharmacy practice residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Klepser has been a Professor of Pharmacy at Ferris State University since 2001 prior to joining Ferris; he was an Associate Professor at the University Of Iowa College Of Pharmacy 1995 to 2001. Dr. Klepser has published extensively on various topics and has more than 100 peer reviewed manuscripts to his credit. He serves as a scientific reviewer a variety of scientific meetings and journals. Dr. Klepser is active in several professional organizations including the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Dr. Jakeman’s research interests include infectious diseases, HIV pharmacotherapy interventions, effective practice and teaching initiatives. Dr. Jakeman received a BS in chemistry from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon in 2001 and a PharmD from the University of New Mexico. She completed a PGY1 residency at the New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System and PGY2 residency in infectious diseases at UNM Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Wright has taken his years of experience managing patients with chronic complex conditions within the veteran population to research focused on evaluating health outcomes and developing innovative delivery of health services. Dr. Wright’s research leverages technology to assist with recognizing and addressing medication adherence barriers and gaps in care.  Dr. Wright received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

Principal Investigator Richard Shonk, MD, PhD

Dr. Shonk previously served as Market Medical Director for UnitedHealthcare (UHC) where he greatly improved relations between UHC and the health care provider community. He stands as a thought leader regarding measurement, payment reform and the advancement of the Patient Centered Medical Home approach to primary care. He also represented UHC on the Health Collaborative Board, and the Cabinet of HealthBridge. Dr. Shonk served as Medical Director of the Quality Institute at the Cleveland Clinic and is a former Vice President of Quality at Ohio Health System in Central Ohio. He practiced as a primary care physician for many years before shifting his career to hospital administration. He serves as co-chair of the Ohio Department of Health’s Patient Centered Primary Care Council whose mission is to accelerate the expansion of the Patient Centered Medical Home. Dr. Shonk received his Medical Degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and holds a PhD in pharmacology.

Dr. Ross is the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Mississippi, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Ross received Bachelor of Business Administration (1993) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1998) degrees from the University of Mississippi. She completed a Pharmacy Residency in Primary Care at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Ross joined the faculty of the School of Pharmacy. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Ross is a Past President of the Mississippi Pharmacists Association and is an active member in a number of professional organizations.

Co-Principal Investigator Lauren Bloodworth, PharmD, BCPS

Dr. Bloodworth has practiced at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as a Medical Intensive Care Unit Pharmacist as well as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Ambulatory Care.  She has since then transitioned to a position with the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy where she served as Assistant Dean for Student Services on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus, as well as, Administrator of the School’s Community-Based Research Program.  Currently, in North Mississippi she remains a Clinical Associate Professor for Community-Based Programs in Oxford.  Dr. Bloodworth is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at North Mississippi Medical Center.

Principal Investigator Michael Fischer, MD, MS

Michael Fischer, MD, MS is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Physician in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research interests include prescription drug reimbursement policy, electronic prescribing, and medication adherence. Dr. Fischer directs the National Resource Center for Academic Detailing, an initiative funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to promote increased use of educational outreach to healthcare providers. Additional research interests include appropriate use of prescription drugs and assessment of complications of prescription drug therapy.

Dr. Fischer attended Harvard College, Yale University School of Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health and went on to complete residency training in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His clinical practice is in primary care at The Phyllis Jen Center for Primary Care.

Dr. Donna West is chair and associate professor at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Dr. West has experience in primary data collection techniques and her funded research has involved survey design and data collection as well as semi-structured interviews. Dr. West has conducted several projects related to community pharmacy and to pharmacy quality. She has been a pharmacy consultant to a quality improvement organization for eight years and is currently one of AACP’s representatives to the Pharmacy Quality Alliance.
